A recent ESPN article (Connelly, Bill - 2026, July 28 - "What advanced stats say about every USMNT World Cup game since 1990") listed xG statistics for all of US' games from 1990. XG, which means "expected goals", has become a helpful way to decipher a team's performance in a game. Although the final score determines the outcome, xG gives analytical insight on how a team performs outside of luck, referee calls, and other uncontrollable variables that often influences outcomes.
